As I understand it, IND only starts a file when you have exchanged correspondence with them, so if you have never written to them, and they have never written to you, you may not have a reference. I'd be inclined to leave the space blank, or perhaps just write "not known". They should still be able to pull previous records, using your name and date of birth.
Incidentally, Waheed is correct - the reference is generally the initial of the family name, followed by a long number.
