You can take the life in the UK test. No problem with that at all, no matter what your immigration status. Your post is somewhat confusing though because you mention going to school. There is no school etc for Life in the UK test. You just buy the book to study, which is very easy. You then arrange for the test and do the test on computer screen at the test centre.
