http://www.ukresident.com/  that has a board just for Work Permit queries. You might find some people with good knowledge of the rules there. If I were you, I would post a message with more detail than you've been giving here. This would include:

* Your nationality.
* How you came to the UK.
* When you came to the UK.
* Do you have a family here, and what are their nationalities?
* What job do you do?
(There are several programmes for different classes of workers.)
* Have you always been here legally?
* Have you ever been here on any other kind of visa,
or always a work-permit visa?

This is information that will help them understand where you're at.

I'm afraid I can't help you, as I didn't come into the UK on a work-permit category, so I don't know much about it; and no one else seems to be responding to these boards much these days. (Shame, as it was such a pleasant place about a year ago.)

Good luck.

I believe work permits cannot be transferred unless you are moving within same group of companies or the company has changed its trading name. A work permit is not your permission to work, it is your current employer's permission to employ you.

If you have a better offer, your new company will have to make an application for a new work permit. I don't know about the timelines but I'm sure you can find it on Home Office Work Permits website. Based on validity of your new permit, you visa will be updated.

P.S. Most people will visit this website during their Life in the UK exam study. Perhaps people like Will is an exception as we can still see you trying to help. Many thanks on behalf of everyone.

E Fidan -- Hi. Thanks for your note.

I'm very happy to stick around. In fact, I think it's guys like me who've finally 'made it' who really need to stick around most, because we're the ones who have the experience to share with the newcomers.

I was sad to find out that the reason PPron quit posting is because he died in January of a heart attack. I had noticed his absence. (It was apparently confirmed officially on the other board only in October, though.) Sad; he was a person who gave a great deal to the immigrant community. Dunno what happened to Malik & Mrs. G, though.

Anyway, I'm no expert like PPron, but I'm glad to share what I know.
Best wishes,
Will
