Dear Karwan,

An application for Naturalisation could be made after a year following the grant of Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Therefore you do not need to wait 5 years, apply next year.

Hope that helps.

Dear Karwan,

No problem at all, another point is that you will be required to sit the 'life in the UK' test for the purpose of settlement (Naturalisation) when the time is near.

Hope you pass that also :)

Hi my advice to you is to contact your nearest law center, ask your local citizen advise bureau. You must have 5 years of lawful stay and 1 year of ILR before you apply for British citizenship. You can apply and be refused and your fee will not be refunded. Speak to your nearest law center.  Also earned citizenship will be introduced in July 2011, you will become eligible to apply for British citizenship and it seems like there won't be anymore fee.Take care.

He everyone

I have been seeing lawyers endlessly about this subject but I just don’t seem to be getting a satisfying answer. I will try to keep this as short as I can, as I do not want to bore you with me. I have been living in the UK alone from 2000. I came here as asylum seekers. In 2003 my asylum application was refused. In 2006 my appeal application was refused as well.

This year 2010 I have been granted indefinite leave to remain in the country outside the immigration rules. Initally I thought I could apply for naturilisation after 12 months of being granted ILR. However different lawyers are saying different things. Some are saying I should go ahead and apply next year, others are saying I have to wait 5 more year!

Now what is your say on this, as I lived in this country nearly 10 years now. Please feel free to say any suggestion. Thank you
