I am afraid its compulsory to under go a test now ,so long as you are not born in this country.

Even if you have masters degree .My advise is read the book and go throw the test , you will find it very useful

The nitpicker in me needs to say that the test is compulsory for people applying specifically for naturalisation. People applying for registration need not take the test, and neither do those who may have been born outside the UK, but who have a claim to British citizenship by descent.
