The procedure varies with the test centre. They have specific days to provide the test and the registered invigilator must be present to invigilate the test. In my area there are two centres and I called both one did give me a week time but it was because I missed the day they usually have the test. Second one gave me options for Wednesday(I called Monday) or Saturday so I opted for Wednesday and took the test after two days.
I believe in your case they must not have the registered invigilator at the time but they will not provide you test on the Walk-In basis because I think they need to register you to the Home Office prior to providing you with test. This is just my thinking.
Check if there are more sites in your area and try them.
