I think you are mixing ILR with citizenship.

There are no restrictions for UK citizens on how long they can stay abroad; you can spend rest of your life outside the UK and you will still keep your citizenship. However, you may lose some of your rights for the period you spend abroad and this is same for every citizen whether born Biritish or became one after naturalization.

Have a look at the following:

http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/applying/nationality/advice/bn1

and check under the heading British Citizenship:

'British citizens have the right to live here permanently and are free
to leave and re-enter the United Kingdom at any time'.

Hello Mr Fidan
I have heard that when you gain citizenship, you also have a stipulation that you cannot stay out of the UK for more than 90 days for a given period. Do you know anything about this, and any details of the rule itself?

Thanks

Put simply, it is rubbish....

When you apply for naturalisation, you make a declaration that, at the time of the application, you intend to continue to have your home in the UK. That is all. There is no limit on the amount of time that a British citizen can spend outside the UK.

The only 90 day limit that I am aware of is that you must not spend more than 90 days outside the UK in the twelve months immediately before you apply for naturalisation. Perhaps this is what your "informant" was thinking of...

Thanks Paul for the info. The reason I was asking is we are applying for our citizenship this year but due to my husband's job, we may be moving out of the UK within 2 months of getting it. We have been living in the UK for the last 10.5 yrs and have ILR.  I heard from someone that you had to re-enter the country every 3 months or so for a stipulated period of time after getting your citizenship, so I became a bit concerned. I really hope this is not the case as this will be costly!

Don't listen to too many people.  When you apply for citizenship there is an assumption that you are getting this to stay in the country but circumstances change.  I believe if you tell home office in advance that you may leave the country they may delay or even refuse you citizenship. Remember this is not your right, it is just a priviledge because they can refuse you on many other things.

you can also call and ask if there are any restrictions on British citizens to stay out of the country.

Good Luck

Whoever has told you that must be out of his/ her senses. Sorry to be a bit rude here but I don't see how can someone suggest that!! There are limitations of staying outside if you have ILR. A British Citizen can migrate to any other country (say to Australia) without losing their British Citizenship. There is no limitations about where to stay !!

From your name it sounds like you are going back to India. And if your husband is in the IT industry then he must have been here during the Y2K era. Economy in India is booming & there are many British born people working in India now.

If you have OIC card, you can regain your Indian passport after 5 years.

31. Can a person registered as an OCI be granted Indian citizenship?
Yes. As per the provisions of section 5(1) (g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, a person who is registered as an OCI for 5 years and is residing in India for 1 year out of the above 5 years, is eligible to apply for Indian Citizenship.

Hi there,

Does anyone know if there is a restriction on how long a person can stay outside the UK after obtaining citizenship? I have heard that you can't stay away for more than 2 years in one go.

thanks!
