Grateful if someone could clarify for me once and for all. If I take ESOL with citizenship classes, will I need to take the 'Life in UK' test? Or can I apply for citizenship immediately after taking the classes?

It is one or the other. If you decide to take ESOL with Citizenship route then obviously you will not need to take the test.
