Sorry I don't like to post personal details on a public forum, I hope you understand. But I can tell you that we live in England, and not near to any city. My wife is the first person here who was ever required to do this course. I expect many people in rural areas will have this trouble. They just seem to assume that immigrants all live in a big city.

I hope someone can advise us, I HAVE read EVERYTHING on the Home Office site, and called all the helplines, but am really stuck.

Hi

I hope someone can help with this query. I've called all the official advice lines as well as the school and the council, but just keep getting passed around, and no one seems to know the answers! They have even given out conflicting information. Sorry for the long post here, but we really need to know the correct answer to prevent our family being split up!

My wife is Chinese and needs to pass the ESOL with Citizenship course before she applies for her ILR in a few months time. Her english is below the required level for the Life in the UK exam, and also there is no exam centre in our part of the country. So, she has been attending classes at the local adult education college, but I'm becoming increasingly concerned that what she is doing may not be acceptable by the Home Office.

My specific query is about the resultant documentation from passing this course, and how to be sure that what we obtain will be acceptable by the home office. The school had never even heard of any of this before my wife enrolled, as she is the first person in our area to require it so they have introduced citizenship materials into the class especially for her. The teacher and the school staff didn't know anything except the information I printed out for them myself from the Home Office and Life in the UK websites.

The school have assured me that 3 certificates in Cambridge "ESOL Skills for Life (Entry 3)*" together with a letter from them stating that they use citizenship materials and that she has advanced a level will be sufficient. She already has passed one of the three (in writing), but the certificate makes no mention of citizenship.

I have been told by the Life in the UK helpline that the course is supposed to give just a single certificate in "ESOL with Citizenship" and that it should state she has advanced a level. This conflicts with information from the school, and from what I have read in other places. I am worried that if we go to the Home Office with a letter from this school they may say something like "We've never heard of them, anyone could have made-up this letter"!

Can someone help please? We need to be absolutely sure that my wife is doing the right course and that she will obtain the correct evidence as required by the Home Office. There is no alternative school in our part of the country, and she is unable to do the Life in the UK exam, so we are quite worried about this. The school now suddenly want £92 every term, plus we have to save up £750 for the application fee. We have a small baby and just want this completed and out of the way so we can stop worrying about it. I have spent many days calling various helplines and searching the web, but the full information seems to be missing!
